In certain instances ARVs are distributed in a manner detrimental to HIV treatment. For ARVs to be effective, it is important that best treatment practice is followed and that their provision forms part of a comprehensive treatment programme. Where unavailable, AA also now contribute funds to ensuring effective HIV treatment and access to:
- Experienced doctors, nurses and support staff
- CD 4 Tests which monitor the success of the ARV regimen
- ARV adherence counseling - failure to follow the ARV regimen strictly can result in drug resistance and death.
- Medicines to treat "opportunistic infections" - many patients develop life-threatening AIDS-related illnesses before accessing ARV treatment
- Transport - many people are dying from AIDS because they are too poor and live far away from clinics
- Nutrition - sufficient food is an essential component of effective HIV treatment
