Since ARVs became available in the West in the mid-1990s, the dying from HIV has largely stopped; even those severely ill with AIDS can become well again. However, in many developing countries, the situation is much worse. Although the international community is now saving many more lives, millions of people are still dying horribly for want of these same drugs.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated in 2008 that of the 9.7m people in need of ARVs in poorer countries, less than 3m people are receiving them.
In 2008, there were 2m AIDS-related deaths.

These are people who are not yet being reached by governments or by the larger organisations combating HIV - such as the Global Fund to fight AIDS, and the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). |
